A painted lookout over a wide valley

Sales velocity: definition, formula and a worked example

Sales velocity measures how much revenue your pipeline produces per day. See the sales velocity formula, a worked example and the four levers that move it.

Sales velocity is how much revenue your sales pipeline produces per day (or per month). It combines four numbers: how many deals you have open, how much they are worth, how often you win them and how long a deal takes to close. Improve any one and velocity rises.

The sales velocity formula

Sales velocity = (number of open deals x average deal value x win rate) / sales cycle length in days

The result is revenue per day. Multiply by 30 for a monthly figure. You can try your own numbers in the sales velocity calculator.

A worked example

These numbers are made up. A team has 40 open deals, an average deal value of $8,000, a win rate of 25 percent and a sales cycle of 50 days.

(40 x $8,000 x 0.25) / 50 = $80,000 / 50 = $1,600 per day, or about $48,000 a month.

The four levers

Because the formula has four inputs, there are four ways to speed up revenue.

LeverWhat raises itTypical action
Open dealsMore qualified opportunitiesBetter prospecting, more pipeline generation
Deal valueLarger or better-scoped dealsSell to higher-level buyers, package larger plans
Win rateBetter fit and better sellingStop chasing poor-fit leads
Cycle lengthFewer stalled dealsClear next steps, earlier contact with the buyer

Each lever has a limit, so look for the cheapest one first. For many small teams that is win rate: working fewer, better-fit deals often beats adding more.

Why it matters

A single total, such as "we closed $50,000 last month", hides why. Velocity shows which part of the machine changed. If it fell, you can see whether you have fewer deals, smaller deals, more losses or slower closes, and fix that part.

Common mistakes

  • Counting junk deals. Open deals that are not real inflate the number. Use only qualified opportunities.
  • Mixing segments. A small-business deal and an enterprise deal have different values and cycles. Calculate each on its own.
  • Using a short window. One strong or weak month can mislead. Use a rolling average of a quarter.
  • Treating it as a forecast. Velocity describes the recent past. It does not promise the next month.

Velocity depends on a healthy sales pipeline, and its win-rate input depends on how well you qualify leads.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good sales velocity?

There is no universal figure. Track your own over time and by segment. A rising number means revenue is arriving faster; a falling one tells you which input to check.

How do I increase sales velocity?

Pick the lever that is cheapest to move. Common choices are qualifying out poor-fit deals to lift win rate, and setting clear next steps to shorten the cycle.

Is sales velocity the same as sales cycle length?

No. Cycle length is one of the four inputs. Velocity combines it with deal count, deal value and win rate into one revenue-per-day figure.
