To write a sales pitch, answer five questions in order: who is it for, what is their problem, what do you do about it, why should they believe you, and what is the one next step. Write it in plain words first, then cut it to fit the channel: a sentence, a call, an email or a demo.
When to use this
Use it before you write any outreach, script or slide. If you want finished wording, see sales pitch examples.
The five parts
- Opener. A reason to talk, true today: a new role, a hire, a post. This is the sales pitch format's first job. See sales trigger events.
- Problem. The problem in the buyer's words. Use phrases from calls, emails and reviews, not your marketing copy.
- Answer. What you do, in one plain sentence. Name the outcome, then the method.
- Proof. One real example: a customer, a number you can show, or a short walk-through. No proof yet? Offer a pilot and say so.
- Close. One small ask, such as a question or a 15-minute call.
The template
(Opener) I saw (the trigger). (Problem) Teams in that spot often struggle with (problem, in their words). (Answer) We help (type of team) (get the outcome) by (one plain sentence on how). (Proof) (A real example, or an offer of one.) (Close) Is (problem) on your plate this quarter? If so I can (small next step).
How to start a sales pitch
Start with them, not you. "I saw you opened a second office" beats "I am calling from a leading provider". If you cannot name something true about their situation, ask a short question about it instead.
How to end a sales pitch
End with one question that is easy to answer. Good closes: "Would it help if I sent an example?", "Is Thursday at 10 a better time to talk?", "Should I close the file for now?" Avoid "let me know if you are interested", which gives them nothing to do.
Two variations
For a senior buyer: drop the proof and make the ask smaller.
For a technical buyer: replace the outcome with the mechanism and name what it connects to.
What to check before you use it
- Read it aloud and remove every word the buyer would not use.
- Confirm each claim is one you can show. Do not state results you cannot back up.
- If it goes out as email, follow the rules: the US CAN-SPAM Act makes no exception for business email, and GDPR and CASL apply in their regions.
Finding the opener faster
The hardest part is the opener. In Rodok you describe a signal in a sentence, such as "new heads of sales at B2B software companies in the US", and a tracker finds who matches, then helps write the first message from what it found. LinkedIn steps in a sequence go to the rep as tasks. Pair this with signal-based selling.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a sales pitch be?
As short as the channel allows. A sentence for a headline, 30 seconds on a call, four to six lines in an email. Start with the short version and add only what the buyer asks for.
What is the best structure for a sales pitch?
Opener, problem, answer, proof, close. Order matters: the buyer should recognize their problem before they hear your product.
How do I write a sales pitch with no customers yet?
Say so, and offer a small pilot or a walk-through using their own data. Honest early-stage pitches often land better than invented credentials.
