LinkedIn message template to send after a connection accepts

A LinkedIn message template for the first message after someone accepts your request, with two variations, a checklist and mistakes to avoid.

The best LinkedIn message after a connection is accepted says thanks, refers to the reason you connected and asks one light question. It does not pitch. The person has just agreed to be in your network. This first message decides whether a real conversation starts. Write and send it yourself.

When to use it

Use it one to three days after someone accepts. The same minute feels automated; a week later, the reason is forgotten.

The template

Hi (first name), thanks for connecting. I reached out because (the real reason: their post, a role change, a shared interest). I am curious how you think about (one specific topic in their area). If it is useful, I can share (a short, relevant resource or example). No pitch, I promise to keep it brief.

Why it works

  • The question is about their work, not your product.
  • It offers something useful before asking for anything.

Two variations

If you want to learn from them:

Hi (first name), thanks for connecting. I have been following how (their company) approaches (topic). What changed most for your team in the last year? Happy to share what I see on my side too.

If you have a soft reason to talk about your product:

Hi (first name), thanks for connecting. I noticed (a specific trigger, such as a hiring push). We help (type of team) with (problem). If that is on your list, I can send a short example, and if not, no worries.

What to check before you send

  1. The reason you mention is true and visible on their profile or posts.
  2. The message has one question and no more than three or four short lines.
  3. You send it from your own account. In Rodok, LinkedIn steps are tasks for you. LinkedIn's rules restrict automated messaging, so check them before you use any tool that sends for you.
  4. GDPR and CASL exist for people in the EU, UK and Canada, so be clear about why you are writing.

Mistakes to avoid

  • The "pitch slap": a long product description within a minute of accepting.
  • Asking for a call straight away.

How Rodok helps

Rodok finds the person and the reason to write. A tracker looks for the signal you describe, such as people who started a new role in the last 90 days, and fills in their company, website and profile link. AI writes a first line from the signal. In a sequence, the LinkedIn message appears as a task with the text ready, and you send it yourself from your account. See social selling for the wider approach and the connection request template for the step before this one.

Frequently asked questions

How soon should I message after someone accepts?

One to three days is a good range. It is soon enough for them to remember the request and not so quick that it feels automatic.

Should I pitch in the first message?

No. Open with a question or something useful. Mention what you do only when it is clearly relevant to their situation.

What if they do not reply?

Wait a week or two, send one short message that adds something new, then move on.
