A CFO email list is a set of chief financial officers with a name, a company and a way to reach them. You have two honest choices: buy a static file that starts aging the day it is exported, or build a CFO contact list you can refresh every week. Rodok builds the second kind, from filters you can rerun.
What a CFO cares about and how they are reached
A CFO answers for cash, the forecast, the close, audit and the cost of everything the company buys. A message that opens with "save time" gets ignored. One that names a finance problem (a slow close, a forecast built in spreadsheets, a growing software bill) gets read.
At smaller companies the CFO reads their own inbox. At larger ones an assistant guards it, and the first useful conversation is often with a controller, a VP of finance or an FP&A lead.
Timing matters. Finance is busiest around quarter-end and the month-end close, so mid-month messages tend to meet a calmer inbox. Budget planning is the other window.
How to find CFOs and build the list
| Method | What you get | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn by hand | Current titles and recent posts | Slow, and no email |
| Company websites | Leadership pages with names | Often out of date, rarely an email |
| Rodok's lead database (Pro) | People by title, seniority, company size, industry and market, usually with a work email | Rerun any time |
In Rodok you describe the list in a sentence, for example "CFOs and VPs of finance at software companies with 50 to 500 employees in the US". Rodok turns that into filters you can change: job titles, seniority, department, company size, industry, cities or countries, and an option for verified emails only. Add title variants (chief financial officer, VP finance, head of finance), because titles differ. A lead usually comes with a work email, but not every person has one, so treat the email as something to confirm.
Add the people to the CRM or a sequence, or export the list. It is a search, so you can run it again next month and keep only new people.
How to verify the emails
- Filter for verified emails only when you build the list, then check a sample by hand.
- Send in small batches first and watch for bounces. Remove every address that bounces and do not resend to it.
- Check the person still holds the role. A CFO who left is the most common bad record, which is why a fresh list beats an old file.
The rules for emailing a CFO
In the United States, CAN-SPAM covers business email too. The FTC guide says the law makes no exception for business-to-business email: use a truthful subject line and sender, include a physical address and honor opt-outs promptly. Read the FTC compliance guide. CASL (Canada) and GDPR (EU and UK) cover their regions.
Signals that a CFO is about to buy
A list tells you who. A signal tells you when. These are sentences you can type into a Rodok Pro tracker (it watches LinkedIn posts, job changes and hiring):
- A new CFO. Tracker: "new CFOs at US software companies with 50 to 500 employees". A new CFO often reviews the finance stack in the first months. See new executive hired and new role outreach templates.
- A funding round. Tracker: "companies announcing a funding round in the US". After a raise, finance usually gets more reporting work. See funding round.
- A finance team being built. Tracker: "companies hiring a controller, FP&A manager or head of finance". A hiring push in finance often means the process is straining.
- A restructure. Tracker: "companies announcing layoffs or a restructure". Cost control moves up the CFO's list. See layoffs or restructure.
A first message to a CFO
An example, with made-up names:
Subject: Congrats on the CFO role at Northgate Hi Priya, I saw you joined Northgate as CFO this month. Congratulations. Finance teams at your stage often run the close and the forecast across several spreadsheets. We help teams like yours cut that down. If it is on your list for the first 90 days, I can send a one-page example. If not, no problem.
For more structure, see the cold email template and the new-role email.
Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to email a CFO from a list?
In the United States, CAN-SPAM applies to business email, so you need a truthful sender, a physical address and a working opt-out. Canada and the EU and UK have their own rules. This is general information, not legal advice, so check your own situation.
Should I buy a CFO email list or build one?
A bought file is fast, but you cannot see how old it is, and people move companies, so parts of it will be wrong. Building a list gives you a current one you can rerun. Rodok builds the list from filters you can rerun, which is the second approach.
How do I find a CFO's email address?
Start with the company's domain and the person's title on LinkedIn. Rodok's lead database usually returns a work email for a person. Verify before you send, and start with a small batch.
